If we're doing anything that involves opening up the exterior of your house, even for a short time – like moving a window or venting a new range hood – those cold winds whipping off the Mississippi can be brutal. Spring (April - May): Things really start to pick up now. The weather's getting nicer, and people are thinking about home improvements. You'll want to book early if you're aiming for a spring start. Plus, if you're in one of those beautiful historic homes up on the bluffs, opening a window for ventilation during demo is a lot more pleasant in the fall.
Weather Conditions That Affect Your Project
You might think inside work isn't affected by weather, but that's not always true. Here's what I mean:
Humidity: Galena can get pretty humid in the summer. This is a big deal for things like hardwood flooring, cabinet installation, and even paint. Wood expands and contracts with moisture. This is critical for cabinets, wood floors, and even granite or quartz countertops, which can sometimes show more seams or stress in extreme dry conditions.
Ventilation: Always use your range hood when cooking. It pulls out moisture, grease, and cooking odors, protecting your new cabinets and paint from buildup and damage. This is especially important in a town like ours where older homes might not have had adequate ventilation originally.
Temperature Stability: Try to keep your home's temperature relatively stable year-round. Big swings can stress materials. If you go away for the winter, don't turn your heat completely off; keep it at least at 50-55 degrees to prevent issues with pipes and materials.
